Bibliographies: In-text referencing

WHEN TO USE AN IN-TEXT REFERENCE

In-text referencing is used to acknowledge the source of quotes, ideas or research written by other people that you are using in your assignments. While a bibliography lists all the sources you've used at the END of your document, in-text referencing identifies the sources WITHIN the text of your assignment.

At Monte we use mybib.com/monte.nsw to help create and manage our bibliographies and in-text referencing. Sign in with your Monte username and password. For help, contact the Monte Library in person or by email at library@monte.nsw.edu.au.

QUOTING SOURCE MATERIAL

QUOTATIONS match a research source word for word. You must put double quotation marks around a quote, and IN-TEXT REFERENCE THE SOURCE.

PARAPHRASING SOURCE MATERIAL

PARAPHRASING is when you rewrite the text of a source to put it in your own words. It lets you show that you understand the source material, so it's usually better than quoting. You still must IN-TEXT REFERENCE THE SOURCE.
